Although Callan was previously allocated €400,00 for the Bridge Street Callan, One Way System as well as provision of wider active travel facilities, Kilkenny County Council have reported that estimated costs for the project have gone through the roof since the project originally went out to tender.
Plans had previously been displayed to the public as part of the Kilkenny Consultation Process but local councilors have now been told that the proposed changes will now have to go back to the drawing boar. Area engineer Declan Murphy said that there is a need to done it back a bit on Bridge Street.
Although the plans have now gone back to the drawing board it is hoped that the badly needed pedestrian crossings at the junction of Green Street/West Street and a second crossing at the secondary school Coláiste Abhainn Rí will be installed by the end of 2023. It is unclear if these crossings will be zebra crossings which would prioritize pedestrians, automatically encourage traffic to slow and ultimately result in greater safety.
Plans for Bridge Street due to be “toned back”
