At the recent Callan Thomastown Municipal District meeting Area engineer, Declan Murphy, advised that the pedestrian crossings due to be installed at the Bridge Street/West Street/Mill Street junction will experience a delay of approx two weeks in the start of the work because there has been a delay in receiving materials which are required for the project.
Works are expected to begin at the end of January and this will increase pedestrian safety at this very busy junction where there has been several near misses due to excess speed.
Already two crossings at the end of Bridge Street at Coláiste Abhainn Rí have already been completed, these crossings include both a raised crossing area which encourages motorists to slow down and the addition of belisha beacons which give priority to pedestrians waiting to cross.
Once works begin at the Bridge Street/West Street/Mill Street junction some delays can be expected, however the contractors will aim to keep this to a minimum.
